Ettiquette question from a (very) new player

Hello~

I dug through the stickies yesterday, but I didn't see anything relating to this, so please forgive me if this is a repeat question.

I've only been playing WoW for about 10 total hours now, and I've managed to get up to level 13 on my brand-spanking-new Dwarf Hunter, but in the last hour or so I've been quite frustrated.

My main MMO of choice is Final Fantasy XI, in which it's considered very rude to storm in on someone else's camp and in which killing things that other people not in your group are working on isn't even possible. Yet, in WoW, I keep having other players run over and hack away at things that I'm trying to kill--Tunnel Rats and Stonesplinter Troggs are the most recent annoyance. Often, I find that I can't loot the corpses after being "helped" with a kill.

Usually, I just pout and mumble to myself IRL that I hate people as I move to an empty camp, but in the last few minutes I had some 20-something Paladin following me from Rats to Troggs and back again repeatedly every time I moved. I don't get the feeling he was trying to hurt my progress, because he kept buffing me, so I'm confused.

What is the proper ettiquete as far as jumping in on a monster someone else is killing? In game mechanics, as far as things like loot or exp, what are the effects? It's really frustrating to not be able to get quest drops on things because someone else jumped in without me asking for or needing help, but I don't want to come off the wrong way about it if for some reason this is acceptable in this game. :(

Thanks in advance.
