FPS Issues

The wow forums have 92 pages (as of yesterday) of complaints and replies and suggestions regarding the degradation of FPS since patch 2.1.

A blue post in the forums has admitted that Blizz changed the graphical rendering in patch 2.1. Minor patches since then have tried to address only a small portion of the problems that have been reported.

I have seen a significant degradation in my performance since the patch and it is continually getting worse to the point where I can no longer do some instances or go to some cities during peak times.

Has anyone else experienced the FPS degradation and, if so, were you able to do anything to improve performance?

I have tried multiple settings, played without addons, lower resolution, etc. etc. to no avail. 3DMark and other games (HL2 for example) demonstrate that my system is more than capable of playing 3D games with high detail at reasonable FPS.

My system is:
Athlon 2800XP
1.5GB Ram
Nvidia 7600GS AGP (latest drivers installed)
WinXP (updated)

I first installed the 7600GS in the fall and got 60-70 FPS without problems. Once patch 2.1 hit, it dropped to 20-30. Now I'm lucky to get 10-15.

The only suggestion I haven't tried, which I have read a couple of times, is to roll back the nvidia driver to the last of the 8000 series.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Regards,
Crispus

I know I went from 70-90 in shat to 30-40 which is kind of annoying but does not really bother me that much. I did think that my card is heating up a lot more, but I dismissed it as "I am probably hallucinating".

Oh well, until blizzard fixes it, there is really nothing we can do:(

I have the same problems during peak times when I visit major cities with lots of traffic. At first I thought it was my system, but for me it started after the patch as well. The only thing that seams to help me is going into the system settings and turning all of the sound options(except channels) all the way down. It sucks to play in silence, but at least my FPS is back up to where it was or close at least. Not sure if this will help, but it worked for me.

Shat destroys my frame rates. Tempest Keep is starting to as well.

Old world cities / areas are a little less too.

Tell me about it... now I don't have the newest computer on the block by any means, but shattrath kills my fps in many areas.

I've turned off everything that I can that helps performance, and but still keep the max distance on objects which still doesn't work all the time as sometimes they don't get rendered until I'm right next to them when they were not respawns, the server/game just couldn't keep up with my mount speed. At least on the flying mount I don't have to deal with that much anymore.

Well the agonizing thing is that in the mostly 2D rendered world of Azeroth, I only get 20-30fps (from 60-70 before the patch). There is no hope in the 3D world of Outlands.

I was in first person look mode, staring at a wall and still only getting 20 fps.

I've done a lot of digging and rolled graphic drivers back and forth, I've set resolutions to 800x600 with all settings set to min and even tried the latest beta nvidia driver. No signficant improvements were observed. The most compelling evidence I have that wow/nvidia are no longer compatible is that even if I try and force 3D settings via hardware, wow ignores it.

I do fairly well in shatt. No real noticable screen lag. 20-40 fps. I lock up frequently during combat but I'm pretty sure its the scrolling combat text addon I'm running.

What really kills me are the first steps up to morose in kara. Where all the undead are having a dance party. On those steps I get 5-15 fps. Throw in an AOE pull with all the mages and locks going nuts and I am pretty worthless. Of course I'm a hunter so I'm worthless on aoe pulls anyway :P

I get some FPS issues in shat, but out in the open I can get 130-160 fps. (In Azeroth)
